Icon package changing,
detailed guide

As you may well already know, the Nokia 6600 was the first S60 device with theme support. It has the function/feature allowing you to choose a different icon/theme set to the one which is installed as standard.

This means that you can install for example some 3rd party theme like Crystallized. Then within this theme you can change the icon set to the default set should you prefer it rather than the icons supplied with the installed theme. You may also combine any of the installed themes with any available icon set.

For those of you who don’t know, it is possible to do this using the theme edit menu (Theme Manager / Option / Edit / Icon) in a very easy way.

Now you will probably think so what!?

Unfortunately all of the phones that came after the 6600, such as 7610, 6630, 6680, etc do not offer this opportunity.

I can’t figure out why Nokia decided to exclude this function from all of their phones after the 6600, all I can say is that Nokia have taken a huge step backwards in terms of theme possibilities, so Nokia, I am ashamed of you once again!?

After many user requests from all over the net to the forum Ask guru, shoot box and through our forum section:

Here are some typical questions:

“Ok, here's what I have in mind.
Get the Mango N6630 theme ... and fuse the original Nokia icons into it.
The original ones! Not the Frost icons, but the original ones!!
But ... when I open the MBM file to view all the *.bmp, there are no icon files whatsoever :-o
Any clues? Ideas? Suggestions?”

“How Can i Change The Themes Icon Which are in my 7610 as in Noki 6600 we can see the option when we edit the themes but not in 7610
Tell me the way by which we can do it”

“Well, for N6600... in the Theme Manager.
click the option->Edit theme->icon
So, in the icon text box. Can you select the icon set to use for your N6600? My N6600 can.. but in N7610, this option is not available. Thus, not many Nokia user know about it.. but N6600 users have different theme management version, i think...”

“No you cant change the icons on 6630 without building them into the theme :( “

We finally decided to stop it and to try and find a solution for this strange Nokia restrict ion...

So here it is,
the SF guide for Icon set changing
on the newer phones such as 6680

1.)

So let’s start, run Fexplorer or some other 3rd party file manager and navigate to Skin (theme) folder, C or E depending on where you have installed the official 6680 themes,

C or E:\System\Skins\...

You should see something like the image right, the number of available folders depending on how many themes you have installed on your phone.

2.)

3.)

Explore all of these folders until you find the Installed theme 1, after having done this you will get something like the image above.

4.)

Theme1.mbm
Theme1.skn
C5C68903258A65F0.ini

The INI file is what we need and if you don’t have it we will have to learn little trick to be able to get it, because without the INI file we can’t do anything.

So now if you have the INI file you can simply proceed to step X, otherwise follow the next few steps and learn how to do it.

There is a simple solution, all we need to do is to setup Custom wallpaper or color palette, then switch to another, and then switch back to the edited theme.

Now exit from theme menu (important)!!

5.)

I hope that you now have the INI file, so run Fexplorer once again and navigate to the theme folder, select the INI file and choose copy or press shortcut 1.

6.)

Now navigate to the 3rd party theme which you want to tune-up and paste the copied INI file.

7.)

Now highlight the original INI file (it has same name as the theme folder), choose Options/File/Rename, press and hold pencil key and choose copy as on above image..

8.)

Then cut the last letter and press OK as in the image above. Now you can delete this file, although I would advise you to keep it as a precautionary measure so that you will be able to simply switch back if something goes wrong.

9.)

Highlight the previously copied file, choose rename again and press pencil then choose paste, click on OK and close fexplorer, we don’t need it any more.

10.)

Now just navigate to the theme folder, switch to the edited theme and enjoy your new icons.

Guru tip
:

If you are a power user you will probably have already noticed that you can do this even more simply by editing the INI file. However I think that the method described above is much easier for newbies, so.. ...
