+ NetMonitor short description

28 January 2005 (late at night) ;o)))

Network Monitor Guide
(FTD)

After I decided to put Network monitor in the download section I felt obliged to describe what you can do with it. I wanted to describe some of the basic functions for users which aren’t experienced with net monitor and maybe feel little confused or daunted when using it.

This short Net Monitor guide is based on lots of different materials available on the net and also based on my personal experience in working with FTD (many years after I first activated net monitor menu on old 6110.)

However, keep in mind that I'm not some kind of network expert and I don't represent any of phones Manufacture Company or wireless broadband network so this is a poor one man show.

Basically this is just an overview of some of the interesting and more important features chosen by me, I tried my best to make this guide but errors and mistakes are possible because of things I mentioned.
You can find more detailed info in the official Charlie FTD guide (which is very hard to understand for non network experts/professionals) and of course in our forum where is located huge discussion with FTD thematic.. ...

As I have already said in news section, Net monitor is nokia engineering menu known from older monochrome nokia's time (5110, 3210, etc) there is some different in comparison with this one (UMTS functions extends, GPRS counters, etc) but all basic functions is the same.

There are no standards, on older monocrome nokia's (DCT3) Net Monitor is built in but hidden and can be activated through additional soft, while on DCT4 nokia's its only comes with a special engineering version of firmware which has built in Net monitor menu, however on Symbian OS phones Net Monitor is a just a 3rd party application, it can be installed just like any other application. After installation, running it shows information’s that is usually hidden like network parameters, phone status, errors, etc.

First of all we need to know that FTD has two basic Menu Display modes:

  • First is Data display mode
  • And second one is the Execute mode

Feel free to scroll and explore trough all data display but be careful when u reach Execute display and don't take any action if u are not sure what are u doing..

* guru tip
about navigation:
with left/right u will scroll trough main category use up/down to scroll trough sub display.
However you can simple reach menu by choosing Option/Change display than enter Group following sub display without dots and leading zero, for example if you wont to reach Force protocol display 81.1 type in 8101

Channel num Number of active channel in serving cell
Rx level in dBm, signal strange, lower is better, if u have more than 120 nokia will take search for alternate network
Tx power level If transmitter is on
Ta Taming advance, multiply this number with 550 to get distance form basic station, if this 0 u are under 550 meters from basic station (for right measurement u need to start some transmission with BS, sms, cal, etc) .
CHty type of current channel, for example CCCH is one of the Common Control CHannels

0102

Paging mode: NO : normal paging,
EX : extended paging, RO : paging reorganization, SB : same as before

Roaming ind: Roaming is indicate with R, otherwise nothing is shown

X - phone is stand-by
0 - less than 0.2% bit errors
1 - 0.2 - 0.4% bit errors
2 - 0.41 - 0.8% bit errors
3 - 0.81 - 1.6% bit errors
4 - 1.61 - 3.2% bit errors
5 - 3.21 - 6.4% bit errors

0103 to 0105

Serving cell info:
Information about currently active channel and all Neighbor channel

0106

Network selection display, show information about currently allowed and forbidden networks

0109

Information about currently used network:

For example
MCC=Mobile Country Code
219=Croatia
MNC=Mobile Network Code
01= T - mobile

69 is a used channel on the current cell

0112 (execute)

This is one of the most popular display, with them u can force channel which u wont to use, for example, you can test how strong is your cell signal, or if u get Network busy message in your area, u cant tray to use channel from other BS and so long...

0113 (execute)

Well, I really, really like this one
Every operator always have some test cells and prior taking them
into commercial use.
So if u keep this on ACCEPTED (standard settings) GSM phones will not try to register these barred cells.
If u set this to REVERSE MS will only use the cells to be tested (UNADVISABLE)
However, if you wont to use both, barred and allowed cells set this to DISCARD (ADVISABLE)

4607 (execute)

This is one will reset all Net monitor counters..

0914

If you send your message trough GPRS u can count her all of them, with all error details and sending attempts

+ Bonus, detailed description of changing network protocol

Run network monitor, choose Options/Change display/select

Type in 8101 like on above image

Hit Options/Execute/select ant type in:
0 For automatic switch
1 For force GSM protocol, or
2 to force 3G network

Phone restart byself after selection and you can enjoy in GSM or 3G protocol ONLY
