Stopping Data Leakage:
Nokia Wants Its "Orphan" Back!

T-Mobile USAThe inside-out "leakage" of confidential information is a serious and fast-growing but yet little discussed problem.

In a recent survey by analyst IDC, the inadvertent exposure of company confidential information was cited as the number one threat, above viruses, Trojans, and worms.

The most common type of information leaked was intellectual property and 81 percent of respondents saw information protection and control (IPC) – defined as monitoring, encrypting, filtering, and blocking sensitive information contained in data at rest, data in motion, and data in use – as an important part of their overall data protection strategy.

Nokia apparently fails to stop leaking sensitive corporate data and their employees and beta testers continues with revealing confidential information and it becoming really hard job for Nokia to keep the upcoming models hidden from the public before its official release!

Sure, this is more than welcome issue for bloggers, end users and freaks like us but the leak of confidential information about unannounced products or technologies can alert competitors and impact a company's competitive advantage and such a huge leak is definitely an extremely serious problem for our lovely Nokia.

As I have already said somewhere, I think that we all owe Nokia a certain degree of respect with their products, like the way that they respect us with their services but after all it is not our fault and once when the information appears on the net there is no way to stop it.

Anyway, after an early and unkind reveal at the Mobile-Review, the official launch of company’s new flagship smartphone isn’t much of a debut at all and lacks the usual excitement that it might have otherwise and therefore Nokia reacted quickly and strongly over at its official conversations blog.

Unfortunately, an early prototype made its way to someone that wasn’t supposed to have it, and his early first impressions of the device and its software spread like wildfire. Buried deep down in the blogger’s salacious headlines about the software not being ready, was the most important point. This is a very early, pre-production prototype with dated software that is not yet ready. So the site’s comments that the software ‘felt premature’ is probably one of the more blindingly obvious things you will read this year.

This wasn’t the first time a Nokia product appeared online before it had been announced. This particular site openly flaunts its ability to acquire our property. Yes, we have to take a look at ourselves, and we are diligently hunting down the source of these leaks. Frankly, we pride ourselves on trust at Nokia, and someone has greatly betrayed that.

However, whilst we are determined to protect our intellectual property and maintain the surprise when a shiny new gadget is introduced, we are not going to do so at the expense of the working conditions we enjoy here at Nokia. We are not the Secret Police, and we want to maintain our culture of openness.

But that’s not all, it seems that Eldar is not happy with their article as well and he also responded to their story through his personal blog and here is the what he says (Google translation from Russiina)

Even I could not say better. People in Nokia questioning my ability to assess problems in the device, which are innate characteristic of the system and those that purchased, that is floating. Given that Nokia has a limited number of people with my experience on different devices, it looks funny. In order not to violate the NDA, I will not list as my knowledge has been used many times. But such assertions seem extremely funny.

The cause of hysteria in the official blog of Nokia is simple. N8 device did not turn as good as we would like the company and the main reason not to iron component, and software. Companies need to somehow survive in 2010 against the competitors who are coming. And here it becomes clear that instead of working on devices, services, and problems with the security of information within the company, the company started the witch-hunt. I consider this blog post with Nokia in that aspect. And how else can one consider that Nokia employees write something, what they are not sure themselves one hundred percent. They do not mention the name of the site, they do not mention my name. Because otherwise, on my part may be followed by a lawsuit against Nokia and they will have to answer for his words. In which they are not sure. And rightly so. So how many times I have openly discussed at various levels in our position in Nokia, spent their time to explain to us that we are not enemies, but everyone does their job. It's funny, but I explained to one of the top managers responsible for security, some methods of our work and their full legality.

To me, this situation is surreal, and for another reason. People far from the real business at Nokia were often dissatisfied or other material, statement on my part or our website. And it is absolutely normal. Some even demanded close to the devil this site, which spoils their experiences. It's emotion. But while we always support the workers, the business relationship with Nokia. And it is also normal. We work equally with all manufacturers. And also create a level playing field for all. If the product is good, he gets a good review. If bad, then bad. Everything is simple and not look for hidden agendas. For example, today at the site a review Nokia 1616 - one of the best budget machines and there is clear about it says. Probably should look for the machinations of competitors that we praised this product, as well as the Nokia 6303i a week earlier. But praise the products that do not deserve it? Spare me, we are not an advertising agency working for Nokia.

Let me tell you about the arrangements that we have reached with Nokia after the leak on Nokia N900. The proposal from our side look easy. We have proposed a Nokia set of online resources, publications around the world who receive the device officially signed NDA. When running these publications can publish news, first impressions, and so on. At the same time from Nokia has an opportunity to show that any problems the time, the company is working on them. It turns subdued view of the many problematic aspects. It's good for the company, it's good for newspapers. And once again - we asked to do so for a large number of publications, and not just Mobile-Review.com. It was our wish.

The Nokia is considered blackmail. While some here blackmail? It's just a proposal, as the company could solve the problem of leakage in our case. We do not need any special conditions, we want to publicly and officially receive the device, and who have. Do you understand? The company has a simple thing, namely, to avoid any leakage from our side. But for this you need to create a program of work with a bunch of resources. Not just with us.

The result was a simple arrangement. Such a program refused to create, but we felt that an agreement between Nokia and Mobile-Review.com sounds like - all diversion devices before the announcement, which will occur with our help means that the company does not formally provide these devices to test. Do you think this is serious? Well, that is, being able to gain access to the devices before the announcement, not to be able to take it at the beginning of sales somewhere? Ridiculous.

My position is that countless times has been announced by Nokia and other companies. The site Mobile-Review.com is not the source of leaks, but at the time when there are photos of the device, information about it, we reserve the right to publish the detailed impressions, review and more about the device. See the difference?

And if we talk about N8 long time I thought that it was published. Is the full list of incomprehensible to me moments and predobzor S3 or put only impressions. I've put only the impressions and as part of the normal, weekly material. Not even as a separate material. This shows how the values and I beat otvozhu this product. I do not think its flagship, unlike Nokia.

It is clear that my position hurts. It is clear that Nokia wants to build good PR after the failure of Nokia N97, gripes on N900, they can not miss with the Nokia N8. But this does not mean that you can say things that you are not sure. And exactly what blogged Nokia.

Do Nokia have the right and a duty of companies to track leaks of information to look for people who can provide such information and so on. My right as a journalist to look for this information, receive it within the law. I've never bribed employees of Nokia or partners or anyone at all, I did not pay for information has never in his life, as well as for the device. All I do is within the law. And if Nokia say that I was violating the law, then they can use legal tools, such as going to court. But the situation with the N8 is not the first such situations with Nokia, we had a few. Each time, the company realizes that it has no legal opportunities to influence me or our issue. Moreover, in the blog post Nokia did not specify my name or the name of the site, why I wrote above. Since such a statement may be considered by the prosecution and I can ask in turn to the courts. But the real facts from Nokia not.

The blog asked Nokia to return back to the prototype of the company. Who is asking? Who directed this letter of happiness? Me? Our resource? I guess they had to write something in the style - "toss the prototype to the door of our office at 12.00 am tomorrow." To whom this treatment? No calls from Nokia, any letters we have received. Only a blog entry. All people are somehow related to this issue from Nokia are some of my contacts, as well as ways to communicate. However, they preferred to behold such an intricate way. Tomorrow morning will contact with the Russian office to find out their position. While my position Nokia is not known at all.

The strange story, which shows the weakness of Nokia. In the aspect of a PR blunder of the company and very large. One person wrote on behalf of the company's collective message (we want, we at Nokia) has put his company in an intricate situation. For me, it looks somewhat funny. There are currently no irritation on the Nokia and the company's actions, there is interest, the situation will show what will happen next. We are working with Nokia in normal mode, as Nokia is working with us I do not know. Since no formal response had yet been. And this will be the most interesting part. In any case, I think about it more than once and I'll write about it. " All the same every day, world leaders are turning to you with their official resources, and carefully avoid to call you by name. He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Ridiculous.

P.S. Originally, I wrote a blog Nokia, but for several hours did not publish. Posted on their behalf. I see it in the list. As well as the comments that have been approved after my time, and written later. The Nokia is apparently intense discussion whether to publish this comment. It's funny again. Smile
