Samsung Omnia HD Loses Its
Nickname
And Gets The FCC Approval
According to the folks over at Mobile Crunch Samsung will strip its first Symbian full touchscreen device of its Omnia brand and revert it back to the classic and boring number scheme they are using for their Symbian S60 based devices making it the Samsung i8910 now.
Although I understand and respect business decision to ditch OMNIA brand and leave it for WiMo devices exclusively there is no excuse for strip its HD suffix as well because HD video recording is probably phone’s biggest selling point and after all i8910 is the first phone capable to process high definition video!?
They also hosted pictures on the MobileInnovator site and it seems they will ship phone with the crappy glossy black plastic backcover as already said in another thread.
Another bad news is that according to documents that appeared on the US Federal Communications Commission's Web site, Samsung has received regulatory approval to start selling its flagship S60 device in United Sates but only for 1900MHz 3G spectrum without support for the 850MHz, which will make the phone more compatible with U.S. networks!
Such approval is required before a wireless device can be sold to consumers in the United States which leads to conclusion that phone is on the way and indicates that it will be released for US markets soon which is the only good news.
Here is the Samsung’s response: To avoid confusion between the original Omnia, which is Windows Mobile, and OmniaHD, which is Symbian, Samsung is deferring to the model number.
