Experimental Multitouch UI For S60 5th Ed
The first multi-touch like interface was introduced way back in 2006, when the NYU professor Jeff Han wowed the crowd at the March TED conference with a demo of his multitouch research.
As you probably already know, due to various technology limitations it was only possible to get multitouch interface on capacitive screens but at the MWC in
Barcelona, Stantum has demoed a multitouch interface on resistive screen that combines the multi touch interface with the accuracy of a resistive screens with an amazing result.
The only problem with this technology is that it requires specialized hardware so there won’t be an upgrade for existing touch devices!
Fortunately, my friend Jamie Fuller, developer of the cool Rotary Dialer application and an addictive Sensitive game for S60 touch devices goes 'beyond touch' with the release of his new project that is supposed to bring a multi-touch like interface to Nokia S60 devices!
Jamie has managed to develop a technology capable to use Nokia 5800's resistive touch screen to perform Multi-Touch function and control the demo game with multiple touch points.
The game idea was a simple derivative of 'guitar hero' or 'DDR' whereby you press a button or buttons along with the music.
The two major problems with this idea on this specific platform are:
1) Button layout, the buttons need to be in an easy to reach location , but also that will not require the phone to be shifted around to reach other keys. also when pressing the buttons its important that the main game play area is not obscured by the players hands.
2) Most touchscreen devices are still only single touch capable. this severely reduces the number of button presses available. unlike a traditional keypad which allows for combos.
Both of these issues have been overcome as you can see in the video. The game is very early on in design but the underlying technology is the real product that I'm showcasing.
Many thanks to www.danceaway64.co.uk for providing the music
Please note that there is no download available as yet, but please stay tuned.
Please let me know your thoughts, I'm also looking for a good graphic designer to help with graphics and a few people to play-test when its a little further along the development chain. This will be a freeware game by the way. Many thanks,
Anyway, here is the video demo and I just hope that he will this concept interface will reach the final stage and hit the masses as soon as possible.
Experimental 'Multi-touch' on nokia 5800
Video demonstrates the experimental multi-touch system, a very promising game actually that recognizes multiple simultaneous touch points and enables multitouch like interface on a resistive screens.
