Is DAB coming to mobile phones?
Nokia says it's possible to put DAB on phones!
DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is a new transmission system that brings all the benefits of digital broadcasting to the world of radio.
It is a highly innovative and universal multimedia broadcast system that will replace the existing AM and FM audio broadcast services in many parts of the world in the immediate future.
DAB is designed for excellent mobile reception, is highly robust against multipath reception and allows the use of single frequency networks (SFN) for high frequency efficiency.
Nokia says that DAB radio on phones is possible and that it would put DAB into their phones once when the technology becomes universally adopted but at the same time Nokia refused to reveal a precise launch date!
"When the technology reaches mass adoption we would consider putting DAB radios into our phones", said Sari Stahlberg, Nokia’s director of Product and Technology Marketing, Mobile Software Sales & Marketing.
"The more the technology is adopted across Europe and other territories, the more chance it's got of being included" she added.
DAB will be great addition for European users, as it brings lot benefits in comparison to classic analogue FM Radio. It offers more station choice, 'hiss and crackle' free reception, one touch re-tuning with no frequencies to remember and the dynamic text information which tells you what and who you are listening to.
DAB eliminates interference and the problems of multipath while in a car. It "blankets" wide geographical areas with an even, uninterrupted signal. Once full services are up and running, a driver will be able to cross an entire country staying tuned to the same station with no signal fade, without altering frequency.
