Will Open Source Fix Nokia's Annoying Practices?
I am a big Symbian fan, but I have to admit to holding off any ideas of a new Symbian phone until I've seen the Android handsets.
I really am a Symbian fan though. I started with the Nokia E70 (too big), then Nokia E50 (too slow, but so awesomely indestructible), then Nokia E65, and now currently an Nokia E51. I had an N95 for a few weeks somewhere in between all that. I love the E51, and actually am quite tempted by the Nokia E66 too.
There are some things that bug the hell out of me though, and it all comes down to the software, and how Nokia treats it.
Two things:
1.) They disable certain features of the O/S depending on the target market of the device. This I cannot stand. So the N95 cannot show your email on the front screen. It is nice that they added support for Mail for Exchange on those N-series devices, but to not be able to have your emails showing on the front screen is a big problem and so I tell customers "You need an E-series phone for push email on the Exchange server".
I am most unhappy about this practice.
It is a shame when they make a phone of perfect hardware, that they cripple the device because "It is not a business phone". Why not make a "do anything phone".
Windows Mobile doesn't do this. But forget Windows Mobile, it is horrible and is for phones what Windows 3.0 is for PCs.
2.) New features. I know they have to sell new handsets, but why can a firmware update not introduce new features? The E66 has some niceties added to the UI, some kind of fade in/out, and no doubt other things. I think it's highly unlikely we'll see those features in a firmware update to the E51.
Now, I wonder if there is an element of licensing costs, after all Nokia don't (didn't?) own Symbian outright, so perhaps that's why there's no active standby plugins available on the N-series.
Will the fact that the O/S is becoming "open source" change this do you think? I don't suppose it will be GPL-like open source, so I doubt we will see custom third-party builds/images out there, but that would be nice.
