Operation SFTS: Connected Home
Symbian Freak Technology Sharing Project

In the spirit of our new technology sharing alliance with Nokia, I'm proud to start the first Symbian Freak Technology Sharing project, Operation SFTS: Connected Home.

The main gist of this project will be mostly about using our devices to share media across our entire home. Obviously, this could be a powerful tool for the future, and Nokia recognizes only Freaks like us can conjure up futuristic ideas that originate outside the box!

What I really need from all you Symbian Freaks out there is input. I want to hear exactly what real power users and content creators actually want right now, technology notwithstanding! In fact, take technology forward, advancing science 30, even 50 years!

Based on that idea, read the following script. Imagine a mini movie, and you'll write the next scene, or even an ending. Give me your thoughts and ideas, implementing media sharing throughout the home and beyond, and relate it to this if possible.

“I read this on the internet yesterday: ‘News from Japan – Man versus Machine, Machine Wins’

This guy who lived in an apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo, his life completely ran on technology. He had networked voice-activated locks on every door and monitor screens in every room, even in the maintenance cupboard. His kitchen was controlled by a touch screen panel that was wired into a server that controlled the fridge, the washing machine, the oven, the kettle, the toaster…

There was another server stack in the living room, an environmental-control unit apparently. It regulated the air temperature in every room, so when he came to enter any room it was precisely 1 degree below room temperature – just how he liked it.

He worked remotely, naturally, but was meant to check in at the office once a month. But he hadn’t for a while, and although he was answering his emails, they seemed to be, well…impersonal, so his boss called the police.

By the time the police managed to break down his electronically-bolted front door, it was way too late. He was lying within reach of the front door, but had never made it outside, as he’d frozen to death, the room temperature was stuck at 30 degrees below zero.

On the icy floor, he’d managed to scratch the words ‘they won’t let me leave’.
In his report, the investigating officer noted that he’d never heard a server make such a satisfied hum.”
