+ HACK: E65 Running N73's Multimedia Menu (Video Demo)

07 July 2008

VIDEO:
E65 Running N73's Multimedia Menu!

emTubeThere's a large faction of users who, like myself, don't really like unnecessary clutter on the Standby screen.

We prefer to avoid the sometimes annoying Active Standby for custom D-pad shortcuts instead. Others swear by Active Standby, and refuse to live without it, many even considering it the main reason they like S60.

A couple of our avid Symbian Freaks decided they wanted the best of both worlds. With a little firmware hacking and patching, the team went to work dedicated to make it happen.

Once again, opening the platform's filesystem has proven its benefit, because I can proudly say they've achieved their goal!

Thanks to two special members of the Symbian Freak modding scene, Nokia E65 users can now use the Multimedia Menu application built into the Nokia N73 firmware and assign it to their programmable Own Key button! Check the video below:

It makes one killer combination when used with Active Standby activated! This will give you the opportunity to create 5 more application shortcuts in addition to those featured in Active Standby, easily accessible via the D-pad. I'm an Nseries loyalist, and not too keen on most of the Eseries devices.

However, after Dogmann's recent E71 article featured the multiple Active Standby screens, and adding this to the mix, I have no doubt the Eseries can be the most productive phone available, enterprise class or not, especially with this patch activated!

To make it all work, you'll need the latest version of RomPatcher, the c2z patch, an E65, and the necessary files from the N73 firmware, detailed in the ongoing discussion in our forums. Detailed instructions are given, with live online help provided if you run into trouble making it work.

(This particular section is open to members only. Fortunately, all you need to do to become a member is register! Its free, quick, and easy!)

The methods they used are specifically for porting the N73 Multimedia Key app to the E65 Own Key button. However, if following the methods used in the process outlined in the original thread (which is archived, so you can easily start from the beginning and follow the entire process to the end.), you could easily duplicate this feat between other devices. This means we should easily be able to also port, say, the amazing Video Editor application from the N95 Classic into the N95 8gb or N82, or the Gallery app of the Nseries into a E90, and on and on!

Special thanks to Nuno Pereira for providing the first video images for everyone online. All credit is due to benjy999 and Leonapapa, the clever creators of this patch, for investigating these firmwares so intently and making this available to everyone! They've personally made one of the best devices even better, and proven that S60 truly is open to anything.
