Nokia working on a Linux powered phones!?!
What does it means for Symbian?!??
Nokia CFO Rick Simonson has confirmed that in the future Finnish mobile phone giant will make mobile phones based on the Linux OS. No further details given unfortunately, but it results with all sorts of speculation about what it means!?!?
It could even led us to speculate that Nokia might consider dumping Symbian altogether and porting its Series 60 user interface to a Linux platform which is hard to believe by the way!?
As far as I know Nokia is the only one of the leading mobile phone makers that hasn’t some Linux powered phone in its portfolio.
It is not that surprising, especially considering that Nokia is the major shareholder in Symbian, an OS which Linux unsuccessfully trying to displace for a years!
First rumours about Windows Mobile powered Nokia phones than they bought Trolltech for about $150 million (lot of money) and now they are officially confirms a Linux based mobile phone?
What does it means for Symbian? OK, maybe Nokia bought Trolltech just to keep it from falling into some other competitor’s hands, or maybe just to extend its Maemo platform which in not based on the Trolltech technology?
I just hope this is just another speculation and Nokia will newer dump Symbian because it is the best mobile operating system at the moment, it is OS that I love and that I got to use it. Please Nokia stop these rumours and convince us that you’ll keep releasing high end Symbian powered devices!!
