+ Technology: World's slimmest 8MPX cellphone module!

18 March 2008

Samsung Unveiles World's Slimmest
8MPX CMOS Camera Cellphone Module

8MPX CMOS CameraSamsung just unveiled the world slimmest 8MP CMOS camera cellphone module but to be honest I am not impressed with this Samsung’s achievement, not at all. I’ll rather choose the larger sensor with few millions less pixels than this tinny 8MPX module with questionable quality?

What’s the point of the millions pixels if the quality sucks, power without controls in nothing basically and they should stop with boosting megapixels just like that and start to work on the quality instead. We really don’t need smaller sensors, we need better, larger and more sensitive sensors for cellphones with a better optic and that is the only way to put cellphone photography on entire new level and make it equal to classic point and shoot cameras.

In a matter of fact, the mega pixel race on the digital cameras of the last years seems to have settled down now but there is a completely different trend in the mobile phone world it. Mobile phone manufactures pumps mega pixels while the optics and sensor size basically remains the same and this terrible effect on photo quality in my personal opinion and this Samsung module is just another step in wrong direction I am afraid although it has ome impressive featuers like ISO 1600 sensitivity, anti-shake capability, face detection technology and trully impressive 1-cm super macro mode.

Anyway, the slimmest Samsung sensor measures are 28mm × 15.3mm × 8.5mm. The semiconductor was designed specifically for cellphones, and it will push handsets beyond their current 5MP restraints. However, that's not the only good news.

The new module, which is 10% more compact than current solutions, will have an ISO 1600 sensitivity, anti-shake capability, face detection technology, 1-cm macro and an automated shoot mode that is activated by silly, smiling faces.
