+ Freeware: GDesk - Desktop Replacement for S60

27 February 2008

GDesk v0.26 BETA
Innovative Desktop Replacement for S60!

GDeskFollowing a couple of requests Gary has started porting of its very well known and very popular GDesk application from the UIQ 3 to S60 3rd edition platform. Thanks to the fact that most of the work GDesk does is done through common Symbian 9 code porting process has been extremely easy since and here is the very first version ready to test it out.

GDesk is a customizable and extendable desktop system. Icons can be placed on the desktop representing applications, page links and plug-ins; these can then be launched by clicking on them.

Plug-ins can be added at any time and as required; further plug-in functionality will be provided over time. Comments, questions and suggestions are welcome; however, this software is written and maintained in my spare time so response is not guaranteed.

Gary said that his is the first release, application is early beta stage and there can be no guarantees so please be careful! Also remember that GDesk can expose normally hidden system applications which might damage your phone so use caution with anything you don't understand!

The main problem is fact that develop isn’t S60 owner and he can’t only test it in the emulator where application works just fine but he want to hear how it looks like on the phone in real usage

Help files are unconverted so you'll see references to UIQ and touch-screen features. As it happens the touch-screen stuff actually works in the emulator, there just aren't (yet) any touch-screen S60 phones.

I’ve just signed and installed it on my N95 and so far I can only say that it works, I am still trying to get to use it, it is the really complex soft with lot of features to check out and undoubtedly great potential.

Considering that application is natively designed for the UIQ touch screen phones, it will perfectly fits to the upcoming 5th generation of the S60 devices that will features the touch screen functionality.

That’s all for now, more over at our forum section, I definitely need more time to get to use it and I’ll post my initial impressions over the as soon as possible. In meanwhile, if you are brave enough to try it below is the file tat contains the applications, few plug-ins and design templates. If you are going to test it please share your thoughts on this soft over at our forum section and help developer to make it better.

Updated Version. No longer requires self signing
