Mail for Exchange versus Windows Mobile
What’s the difference?
Are you curious what is the different between the Mail for Exchange and Windows Mobile? If answer is yes than I have something for you. I’ve just a found quite simple explanation over at Jason Langridge’s weblog, he has been asked that question many times and has provided a little insight for you.
As you may have already know Windows Mobile devices comes with a mobile version of the Outlook e-mail client that communicates with an Exchange server using ActiveSync and it works very well what is expectable after all because Outlook works very close to the desktops version.
From other hand, Nokia S60 devices contain a very simple, unfortunately almost completely useless email client (ProfiMail is way better solution by the way) that among other limitations also lacks the support for ActiveSync.
To enhances the built-in email client with ActiveSync functionality Nokia has created an application called 'Mail for Exchange' which is currently available for whole E Series family plus the few devices from the Nseries family, Nokia N95, Nokia N73 and Nokia N76 to be precise.
To be honest I am really not an expert for the PIM but according to Jason following things are missing compared to a Windows Mobile Device.
- You can't access the subfolders of your inbox - this drove me mad as I tend to store everything in subfolders
- You don't get HTML email
- You cannot access IRM protected email or documents
- You can't create a Meeting Request on the device
- If I add a picture to a contact it doesn't sync both ways successfully
- If you are an administrator you can't wipe the storage card on a Nokia device nor can you enforce encryption from Exchange
Anyway, in my personal opinion both platforms provides the essential synchronisation functionality and which one to choose is up to you, my choice is very well known :]
