Mobile Operating Systems:
The New Generation
Mobile Phone Development Blog spots about new free report at ARCChart which reviews the software platforms from 15 vendors - A la Mobile platform, The whitepaper reviews the software platforms from 15 vendors - A la Mobile platform, Access Linux Platform, Adobe Flash Lite, GTK+, MiniGUI, Mizi Prizm, MontaVista Mobilinux, Nokia S60, Obigo Suite, Openwave MIDAS, Qualcomm BREW, SavaJe, Symbian OS, Trolltech Qtopia and Windows Mobile.
These are major players in their respective software segments, from those offering full end-to-end operating systems to those providing UI frameworks, AEEs and OS kernels. Reviews provide product background, positioning, and technology, and summaries the company’s strategy moving forward.
The report is completely free because it is sponsored by Trolltech. The report reads best if you are a hardware OEM but, it’s also a good read for mobile developers wanting to know which mobile operating systems might dominate in the future as well as for the all Symbian freaks because it contains some interesting parts regard to Symbian and S60 platform which is overviewed separately from the Symbian OS, quite strange isn't it?!???
ARCChart claims Nokia is effectively in operational control of Symbian which discourages competing phone manufacturers from adopting the OS.
The 2 nd but not less important ARCChart also thinks Symbian has become software house for Nokia, albeit and expensive one. Because of the ongoing expense, it expects Nokia will gradually port S60 to Linux. It was already discussed numerous times on Symbian Freak and I’m not going to spend even single word on this ironic statement.
