+ Garmin’s GPS Navigation and Wireless Hands-Free Calling

10 March 2005

Make your smartphone even smarter
with GPS and Bluetooth wireless

Garmin International Inc., announced Garmin Mobile™ 20 an automotive navigation system that delivers Garmin’s voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions using Bluetooth wireless technology on Nokia, Windows Mobile and Treo 650 Smartphones.

Garmin Mobile 20 provides both data connectivity as well as hands-free capability and is packaged with the GPS 20SM™, a new mobile phone mount with a built-in, highly sensitive GPS receiver and Bluetooth-enabled speaker and microphone. Garmin Mobile 20 will also be the first Garmin product to use the Garmin Online™ wireless data services that includes real-time traffic, gas prices, safety cameras, weather information, and other location relevant content. Garmin Mobile 20 was announced at CeBIT, Europe’s premier electronics trade show in Hannover, Germany, from March 9-15, 2006.

“By combining hands-free phone capability, wireless connectivity and location-relevant rich content with turn-by-turn GPS navigation, we are able to provide customers with a total turn-by-turn navigation solution for smart phones,” said Gary Kelley, vice president of marketing.

Garmin Mobile 20 gives smartphone owners the same high-quality mapping features found on other Garmin portable GPS devices. Users can easily navigate to a specific street address or search millions of points of interest (POI’s) – places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions. After selecting a destination, Garmin Mobile 20 automatically calculates the fastest route to the destination, and provides voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions along the way while showing a 3D moving map on the phone’s display. If a driver strays off course, Garmin Mobile 20 will automatically calculate the quickest way to get back on track. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ – a world leader in premium-quality mapping.

The Garmin Mobile 20 package will be available in July. The European package will include Garmin Mobile 20, GPS 20SM, and a preloaded regional data card. The North American package will include Garmin Mobile 20, GPS 20SM, and maps of the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico preloaded on a 1 GB data card. More information is available at www.garmin.com.

Garmin Mobile 20's smart features include:

  • Phone mount with Bluetooth wireless speaker and microphone — lets you speak "hands-free" so you can focus on driving
  • Intuitive navigational software for smartphones — included on data card and provides the same high-quality navigational features found on other Garmin portable automotive GPS devices
  • Detailed, accurate mapping software — included on data card and provides detailed maps for one European region (European package) or maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto (North American package)
  • Easy and convenient setup — just plug included data card into smartphone, power up the GPS 20SM and go; software automatically installs itself, turning your smartphone into a fully loaded, wireless navigation system
  • Garmin Online™ — provides free and subscription wireless data services to Garmin Mobile 20 customers with Internet access on their phones. Services include real-time traffic, gas prices, safety cameras, weather information, and other location relevant content
  • Short message service (SMS) integration — lets you send your location via text messaging, and easily view received locations on a map or navigate to them
  • Integrated high-sensitivity GPS receiver — provides faster acquisition times and maintains signal under heavy foliage and near city skyscrapers
  • Built-in suction cup and phone charger — make it a snap to install the GPS 20SM on any windshield and conveniently charge most smartphones (adapters included)

With Garmin Mobile 20, you have everything that you need to start navigating with GPS. Detailed maps, automatic routing, 2D or 3D map perspective, and turn-by-turn directions make it easy to locate addresses. Or you can search millions of points of interests (POIs) — places like hotels, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions — then dial the POI's phone number automatically for reservations, hours of operation, or other information and speak hands-free while staying focused on the road.
