Officially announced by Sygic - they submitted their final version of their navigation app to Nokia last Thursday and are now awaiting approval.
I can't believe Nokia didn't capitalise on being the only player in the market by releasing a fully-functional version of Ovi Maps at release, now they stand to lose considerable market share in Maemo to Sygic...
I guess we'll have to wait and see whether Nokia plays fair and lets their product onto the market, or whether they stall to get theirs out first. Chance to see just how open Maemo really is???

Do you know how does Sygic compare with the free ovi maps turn by turn navigation that Nokia announced today (21 january), and how much Sygic might cost? Also, according to Engadget, there may not be any plans to release that navigation for N900, at least in the near future. Do you know how much effort Nokia would need to expend to provide this navigation for the N900? I'm not a developer, but would love to have turn by turn navigation on the N900, especially at the price Nokia is providing it for.
From Engadget: ("N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap." (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/21/noki ... nes-globa/).
Thanks in advance.

Yep, not great for N900 users. If they want to see voice guidance in the next 6 months or so they'll be paying Sygic...

it's a huge downstep (not having ovi's voice navigation on the N900)...
I'm ready to pay for Sygic but was hoping that nokia would eventually realease an update to Maps...

Same as you, ready to buy Sygic's offering to get some satnav, but a bit grumpy that the N900 is a high end Nokia with the high end price attached - yet no news from Nokia on if and/or when Maemo 5 will get the free turn by turn

With large op co's taking up the N900 surely they will want a GPS apoplication on the device. Now a high end phone which does not have audio and video player, camera and GPS is going to suffer as its the excuse most people give when paying top dollar for a device surely.

It's rather short sighted of Nokia do you not think ? It feels like further evidence of Nokia's surprise how the N900 has taken off.
I shall be buying Sygic's application just as soon as it comes out I'm fed up of carrying my N95 around just to use as a (still paying Ovi maps customer !) sat nav. I feel pretty hard done by after shelling out for my N900. Gotta love it though.

Yep, still waiting. This smacks of anti-competitive practice on Nokia's part, not good enough.
