This is a real conversation on Facebook with a friend I grew up with:
M Christopher McFann: You should search "Nokia N900" on YouTube and see for yourself, or check my blog, Maemo-Freak.com.

Dana XXXXXX: Bree I'm doing awesome! Chris, the I-phone is awesome, Nokia is poop.

M Christopher McFann: RIght... That's why Nokia has 40% of the global smartphone market, and Apple has 12%. That's why Nokia is already running full bore and totally open Linux distro on the N900, not a BSD based OS with blocks and limits like the iPhone. That's why the iPhone has a craptastic camera, while the Nokia Nseries sets the bar for mobile photography since 2002.
Don't you know I'm a geek and do reviews on smartphones from time to time?? I review phones from all over the world, so I have a bit more insight. You didn't think you'd win such an argument, did you, Dana? Silly girl... LOL!
While you're at loving the iPhone, try watching HULU videos in the browser, or playing the Flash based games on Yahoo. Or run more than one app at a time. Or shoot widescreen DVD quality video with TV out to your HDTV. Or listen to tunes while on the phone. Or change the battery. Or type without looking at the screen.... Read More
iPhone is a toy for neophytes. Nokia's smartphones are much smarter. You should try one and see for yourself. Check Nokia.Maemo.com for clues, D.

Dana XXXXXX: Ok you win. I don't do all that stuff, so my poor iPhone is good enough for me.
You win.

M Christopher McFann: Typical American sentiment... "I don't do (X), so I'll settle for (Y)". If you use a PC and you buy a $699 phone, the N900 is perfect for you. Advance, ma, ADVANCE!

Now Dana's not dumb. She's just typical. She's unaware of what's out there, and follows the status quo. If you watch TV, you see every commercial with either the iPhone, Android, or Blackberry, with the iPhone the most favored, Blackberry for business, and Android as the iPhone alternative. Where's Symbian? Online or at Bast Buy, unlocked for a high price. And the models at Bast Buy? Dummy models, not actual devices you can try. See the issue?

Great post and spot on. As I mentioned previously. When I showed the sales rep at AT&T my N86 and the things it could do, they were amazed. They loved the pictures, the duo-slide features, and all the other bells and whistles (software) that it had on it. Most of all they were floored when I told them the price and that it was unlocked. My son works for Verizon and he calls them the spawn of satan for the way they keep customers in the dark and the way they lock down phones. Until the operators open up phones, and people start to realize that there are other brands out there, the US will maintain a very myopic mentality in regards to cellular technology.

Nokia has the most advertisements as "cameo".
Like, popping up in Pussycat Dolls - Jai Ho, i also saw an american movie where a phone was in center, guess which, it was a Nokia 6600..
(Old movie, old phone..)
Remember, Nokia makes a solid platform.
The only thing making it crash or fail is user-made content with errors in.
In App-store for iphone there is Apple filtering out faulty or bad content before it comes to publicity.
On S60, Nokia doesnt need to worry about that because its better for us, the users, to test out our own applications and methods.
Also, Android sucks..
There is only 1 coding language, Java, and there is no way to break that barricade to access the real Linux behind.
On Maemo, they kept the whole Debian kernel!
The only thing they did was add the window system like in other Linux distribiutions.
Thats the point with Linux being open source, people can modify as they wish, but mostly there is made window systems. There is still alot work done to make it for MID.
However, Symbian OS is very unique and standing out from both Android and iphone, making it a hell lot better.
Its made from the bottom, never ported from a PC system. iphone OS = Mac OS X. Android = Linux.
Series 60 3rd/5th edition = Symbian OS, which made its ground parts many years ago, making a rock solid system.

The primary point is: Build it and they will come! That is, develop/encourage the apps/features that everyone wants, and people will buy your phones. Case-in-point, why is Adobe not coming out with Full Flash on Symbian as soon as other platforms? I can only assume Symbian hasn't been aggressively working with Adobe to make it as easy as possible to make it happen.
