666, I somewhat agree. Symbian, in my opinion, is poised to become a monopoly. It has the deep pocketed parents as the baby of the 5th most recognized brand in the world with a formidable suite of services, an SDK that supports development in various languages, and comes in devices of diverse form factors and prices. Only Android can boast a similar situation.

Guys, keep in mind that despite Nokia's UI reputation, they are presenting the UI the way it is for a reason. Nokia has TAT as a great consulting partner for UI. I don't think anyone does UI better than The Astonishing Tribe. And Nokia's been implementing the Kastor framework for awhile in its devices, so obviously Nokia had plans to enrich the UI.
I expect the next UI to be rich like the Kastor demo videos we've seen in the past, something similar to the Sony Ericsson Rachael UI. Just speculation, but everything I've seen from Nokia and its partners gives me reason to be optimistic.

speaking of UI, David Wood once wrote that symbian will hopefully have a changeable UI just like themes. Given the majority is used to s60 legacy an others prefer other. It makes sense since the use of QT and symbian will be module based and therefore easy exchancable UI. Giving value to software which is future core plus services(more service based) in the mobile realm.
This again helps the OS serve manufacturers and carriers for custom UI, just like we seen wit android.
Second if someone believes that nokia or symbian will be behind again is wrong. Apple palm an android just had a head start in the UI domain thats about it.

As Americans become more sophisticated mobile users, the differences in OSes will become more apparent. App developers and the services will push what devices get sold and become popular.

I left Symbian for Android just because it didn't evolve.
Android is evolving faster than any OS out there.
You guys speak of years, which is ridiculous, anyone following the mobile OS evolution will understand that this is doomed to fail.
Nokia has been on top for years and took everything for granted, they forgot how to evolve because of their success.
Why would a manufacturer switch to Nokia?s Linux based Maemo platform when there is Linux based Android already?

I was reading this 2 David Wood links

Just doesn't seem like now is the time for other companies making symbian phones with the code break coming so soon after the last one.
