Nokia N900 Hands On Preview [Video & Photo & Text]

Hello dear Maemo Freaks or maybe you, first time visitor. In that case, I whole heartedly welcome you to the definitive Maemo blog and to our very first coverage of the upcoming Nokia N900, that is already viewed by many as the next big step in mobile phone (r)evolution.
During my visit at the Symbian Exchange & Exposition event that was held a few days ago in London, I was able to snatch this highly anticipated device for a closer inspection under my camera.
Perhaps there's some hidden plot I'm yet to fully uncover, but I’ve noticed a surprisingly large number of people thoughtfully typing with N900’s like there was no tomorrow, and my geeks heart almost couldn't bear to watch. A quick glance at their badges with 'Nokia' written bell... .. .

This is the start of things to come for Maemo. A powerful OS with powerful hardware. It makes you wonder what is in store for Nokia in the future. We've all seen glimpses of Maemo 6, but the possibilities are literally endless. I can not wait until I get mine, and every review I have read about it, has been all positive.
As for Nokia holding back the release...I have a feeling they are adding some great final touches before it hits consumers. This will be a device that stuns the market.

Honestly I think the expectation level raises with how long the device gets delayed. I mean i come from a place where the new best seller is what is new regardless of what it can perform SADLY (Middle East) Never the less there are a few GEEKS like myself that drools over the specs sheet more than the pix of any device. I believe the N900 is the next N95 and will pave the way for many Maemos to come! Maybe even a NON-TOUCHSCREEN Maemo
The 1320 MAH battery that powers the N900 is the same of the 5800XM aka the legendary TUBE and it did fine in powering symbian 5th edition however on a Maemo? I think it can power it up; in terms of dimensions the phone can easily fit a BP4L 1500MAH battery but obviously Nokia ALWAYS know what they are doing. I think the battery life will be just fine
What I'm interested in though is something that makes NOKIA so unique over the years and if it was implimented in this new UI also; the PERSONALIZATION AND SETTINGS menus I mean the browser and interface multi tasking IMs we have seen over and over again on YouTube and blogs, however how is the Profile menu set out? Is the SMS/MMS tone limited to time? only 15 Seconds? 20? or unlimited? can we make more than 5 Profiles as we do on Symbian? Also! does the phone support a virtual ALPHANUMERIC Keyboard for texting? or are we restricted to Landscape mode only?
AAAAAHHH sooo many questions! Can't wait to get my hands on a N900, for now, i'll just use the N97 mini for the hell of it sense its around the corner and will be here as soon as any second now!

Nothing a 3rd party app can't handle, I'm sure the inherent OS weaknesses are being covered as we speak. The reason behind the shifting the N900 release date is probably to increase the compatible apps to acceptable numbers and to work out the firmware issues, I'm sure of it

True! the whole rushing the phone out and flooding the market with a N900 with a laggy constintly crashing software then releasing firmware updates should not be the concept here; not with a new highly anticipated UI at this time and age from a leading Company like nokia to mess up! its all about first impressions! and later on ad-ons and updates will just add to the love at first sight or hate! either or, N900 deserves the hype and all the respect from any phone/gadget lover, it sure is the door to a new era!

heh no problem mate
anyway, I was thinking if there is any posibility that n900 will run in portrait mode? or this is only for calls? I hope they will make it to work in both. what do you think?

I'm not too optimistic about this, I think I saw that profile screen and there was very few pre-defined options there, but that might be still changed in the final fw.
About the portrait mode, I'm sure I've heard on numerous occasions that N900 was built as a mobile computer first, and thus primary made for two handed use in landscape mode. Not sure if Nokia would want to break that concept. The one-handed, more easy to use telephony is Symbian territory.
Apocalypso, still struggling with my SEE 2009 article, there's about 32 pics to go with my comments and impressions, trying to make it as less boring as possible with my poor writing skills...
