Sweet Misery: Overwhelming Demand Delays Nokia N900 Launch

Image

Nokia is facing the unenviable task of telling to their suppliers that company’s first Maemo 5 powered phone has been delayed due the overwhelming demand and that they will not be receiving units until December 4th!

Situation is totally out of control and has reached the point where it has started to impact Nokia’s supply chain; company just can't keep pace with the hype and the number of preorders which not that bad after all, as this is a problem that most companies would love to have.

However, the good news is that pre-order customers will start receiving their devices immediately and the company has promised those orde... .. .

I'm just surprised how the prices go up and down on internet. Yesterday I had some spare time in my hands and I was following, mainly, Newegg, Nokia-Usa, Amazon and Dell.

Newegg went from pre-order (around 500) to order (549.00) back to pre-order in a span of few hours and while it finally settled the price was back to $649.00 with a 6+ week delivery. At one point I talked to newegg rep online and he said they had units in stock but when I tried to add to cart it was too late...

Nokia-USA was steady 649.00 all the time with no indication of any deals. but seems like they have the phone in stock

Amazon has or has not shipped units depending who you talk to price is good around 450.00 with rebates and stuff.

Dell's price went from 538 down to 449 overnight and now they say delivery is in +6 weeks

It was like watching stock market go up and down... funny

There is also an issue with the delivery of devices. Some etaileres are complaining that Nokia is ordering them to hold their stock until a particular date, yet they are delivering devices overnight to new buyers from Nokia.com. People who preordered (like us, Teo), even though we ordered far ahead of others, will likely not get our devices before those ordering since the preorder became order now. Many people are up in arms, and Nokia is taking alot of heat. Supposedly, one etailer mistakenly delivered a few before they were permitted, and Nokia has stopped allowing them to take orders. I haven't confirmed that myself, however.

Either way, as always, I'll be stuck at the house tomorrow, hoping the delivery driver brings me a dream. I've been doing it since October 20th, and its like waiting for the crack dealer to bring me a hit. The N900 really is dope, to say the least. If I don't get a device soon, I'll have to go to rehab to deal with withdrawals. Its not pretty.

I LOL'ed ! I'm not in the same situation since I have not preored, but last saturday I just drove in front of a reseller having the N900 but said to my self "I'll get it closer from home", and since then, I haven't seen any N900 "available"... Damn ! Next monday I'll drive by many resellers to see what can I get... Yes, it's really dope... !

I assumed that Nokia was telling etailers to hold the stock. Remember the 5800, e71, and N97 fiascoes, to name a few? Nokia would put up the pre-order page and others would flock to Dell.com, Amazon.com, and NewEgg.com to order the device for a lot less than Nokia was selling it for. Then, when people who pre-ordered the devices, directly from Nokia, got the device later than everyone else, they were MAD.

I learned that lesson a long time ago. I thought it would have been the same with the N900. NewEgg says on their site that it will be "released" on the 30th of November. We'll see if that is the date Nokia told them to release it. Nokia probably wanted to cater to those who had spent the extra money to order directly from Nokia.com and make sure those customers did get the devices first rather than from the etailers.

I suspected this from the first talks about it being released. I haven't heard any substantial proof that this is what happened, but it does seem plausible.

I pre ordered from Dell on 11/5/09 with a delivery date of 12/10/09, then on 11/16/09 Dell canceled order and after 4 phone calls and 4 different answers they put it back on order with a delivery date of 2/1/10. Well today 12/04/09 I have a email with tracking # and the N900 will be here 12/07/09....Yea Baby...so things are looking up!
