Nokia Is Surprised With Large Interest Towards Its First Maemo Powered Smartphone
The most ingenuous and powerful combination of software and hardware ever created has received tremendous buzz from both carriers and consumers and I would say even Nokia has been surprised with the success of its first Maemo powered smartphone and unanimously positive response they were receiving from large majority of participants at its recent Nokia World show in Stuttgart.
Not only consumers but whole mobile industry itself seems somewhat caught by surprise with the release of Nokia N900 and Nokia?s decision to switch its high-end devices from Symbian to Linux based Maemo platform.
But it is not only Maemo, neither the hardware, nor the way it looks, it is openness that offers a huge potential for a flexibility that is not available on other mobile pho... .. .

Interesting isn't it? Shows how estranged Nokia has become from users. This is the phone the N97 should have been specs-wise, and it ups the ante with a better UI, which is what people want, and then they're surprised that the response is good?
I think they pidgeon-holed this handset as a niche device, not even realising its wider appeal, and I think it illustrates they have fallen out of step with consumers... Hopefully this response helps steer them the right way from here on out!

offtopic: Dude, your web link to this topic is incorrect.
ontopic: I wil certanly buy N900. It's just a wonderfull device
The only shame I see is 5MP camera. I'm kindof inlove with N86's for some small (not enough to buy) reasons.

Me too, I can't wait to get my hands on one and I was all but swayed completely away from Nokia after the final disappointment (for me at least) that was the N97.
I must say I'm not too bothered about the camera though, 5MP/8MP is all much of a muchness. Arguably the flash being LED and not gas discharge is a bit lame but then I don't tend to use flash ever, not on my phone or my 10MP dSLR camera so it's not really of concern to me. I'm just interested to see, given this open OS, whether people will be able to come up with software that saves camera images in non-JPEG (hopefully even RAW) formats, or at the very least drop down the compression levels on images to what we want and not what Nokia presets them to. That more than an increase in MP will improve the image quality more than you could imagine.
Nokia deserve praise for this phone, it's really impressive and a very promising step for them and for the industry. It really does deserve to do very well indeed but Nokia need to wake up - this should not have been a surprise to them. It truly is a competitor for the iPhone even though it is a more expensive price point (although not entirely out of the same bracket thanks to the expensive O2 contracts that you get locked into with the iPhone, here in the UK at least). I just hope that Nokia and the operators have the sense to subsidise this one properly, not mess it up with alterations and software crippling and don't faff around forever with no information to customers, before finally releasing it. It's frustrating that as of today, Vodafone UK (my service provider) can't/won't make a comment about whether this phone will even be released on their network and we're only weeks away from October now. I hope that they sort it out soon!!

If it is true then Nokia managers have serious troubles to understand the current smartphone world and this is quite worrying. Because this could mean that their whole stratgegy could be built on wrong assumptions and would be even more flawed than i could have ever believed. How can someone relatively knowledgeable about the smartphone market be surprised that the N900 generates much more positive buzz and feedbacks than the N97 ?
The N97 is essentially the best and most offending attempt of cow milking that Nokia has ever designed.
It is definitively not what Nokia has advertised and it should have been significantly better hardware wise and even software wise at launch.
Sure it is selling relatively well but it is also said to have a quite high return rate. In all cases, i have yet to see a single personn with a N97 while i have seen several with iPhone, a least one with a 5800, an increasing number with the latest WM phones (which have been significantly improving those days to the point that i am considering a WM 6.5 device and put SPB shell on top of it), Eseries and even blackberries.
On the other hand the N900 is more or less what Nokia has promised with the N97 and this mainly as it is closer to a mobile computer than any available smartphone.
All this said the surprise of Nokia is understandable when one consider that they have dared to release a netbook as expensive as the booklet 3G with such hardware limitations.
In fact the booklet 3G is incredibly similar to the N97. It is a device with great design, certainly great build quality but hard to understand hardware limitations. Even worse while Nokia had the possibility to optimize N97 software to compensate the underpowered hardware it can not do the same with Windows 7. And i do not see Microsoft optimize much further Windows 7 for ATOM Z series as it is not profitable either for them or for most manufacturers.
So the company which has designed both the N97 and the booklet 3G with such limitations and which certainly expect both to be hugue successes, should certainly have a hard time to understand why people are more interested by the N900.
I would really love that the N900 was significantly more successful than the N97 and that the booklet was a failure. Such events would shake and hopefully wake up Nokia. Unfortunately the N900 is too big to be as successful as the N97. Though who knows...

teo the link in the post is not directing properly.please check it.
and yes i agreed with the gen concensus-if they are surprised then they missed the pulse of the consumers totally.
as far as the ph cam goes i'm not really that much worried.anything to keep the price down because i'm not going to change my n82 anyway.
any idea when its going to be launched in india and what'll be the launching price?
