+ Dr. JukkaHas Rolled Out A Minor Update For Y-Browser!

Y-Browser Gets Minor Update
Still Not Fully Compatible With S60 5th Ed!

Y-BrowserDr. Jukka just rolled out yet another update for his Y-Browser, probably the most popular 3rd party file manager for the Nokia 3rd and 5th edition devices as well.

There is no change log so I can’t tell you what is new but I can confirm that is still not fully compatible with 5th edition devices although it works fine and is still the best solution for owners of the touch devices. The main issue, inability to use the onscreen keyboard remains unsolved for now and I just hope that Jukka will read this article and try to fix it as soon as possible.

It is really an annoying issue because we can’t use some really important features, it impossible to rename files, create folders and run search for example. It is indeed capable to run the any of the offered input method but it fails to accept what you type in so everything remains the same after clicking OK.

The problem is even worse considering that LonelycatGames’ X-Plore suffers from the same problem and is not really finger friendly and therefore it is nearly impossible to use it without stylus.

Another problem is the file marking, I know it is not really a bug and it is caused Nokia decision to exclude the pencil key but it should be fixed as soon as possible.

Therte are few possible solutions, one will be using the camera trigger or one of the volume keys as the pencil and another one, which will be even more elegant is adding the some kind of ‘Mark more’ feature that will enable marking more files by simple touching them instead of extremely annoying procedure of marking each file through the menu system.

Speaking of the marking problems I need to mention the ‘Mark with wildcards’ feature that can be really helpful to mark multiple file with similar name or extension, for example, with this feature you can easily mark range of several hundreds of screenshots to move or delete them but it doesn’t work due the mentioned input bug :(

Anyway, as I have already said somewhere, I’ve tested most of the available S60 3rd ed file browser and I find Dr. Jukka’s product as the best solution for the 5th Ed devices at the moment. It is completely functional, its interface is very finger friendly and all feature including handy inbox function (available as a plug in) work just fine.

Of course this is just a regular 3rd ed browser version and there is plenty of room for improvements, there is lot of wasted spacer on the great high-definition screen and it need to be update to get the most from the screen as well as from the touch controls. It also fails to enter full screen mode when the ui is switched to landscape orientation and it need to be fixed as well.

Y-Browser

So, in short, it is highly suggestible to get Y-Browser and using it instead of the very limited default Nokia’s browser. It has access to all drives and all folders (except the caged directories) and it implements all standard features such as file/folder manipulation. You can copy, move or delete files and entire folders, create folders, create and unpack Zip archives, it also has integrated text and image viewer and much, much more.

Y-Browser

All in all, get it as soon as possible and don’t forget to get and install plug-ins as well, you’ll not be sorry I swear :P
