+ Space Dancer: First Multitouch Like Game For Nokia 5800!

13 April 2009

Space Dancer [alpha]
First Multi-Touch Like Game For S60

Space Dancer The first multi-touch like interface was introduced way back in 2006, when the NYU professor Jeff Han wowed the crowd at the March TED conference with a demo of his multitouch research but due to various technology limitations it was nearly impossible to get the real multitouch interface on devoices equipped with capacitive touchscreens.

However at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Stantum has demoed an improved multitouch interface on resistive screens that combines the multi touch interface with the accuracy of a resistive touchscreen with an amazing result and the only problem with this technology is that it requires specialized hardware so there won’t be an upgrade for existing touch devices like the Nokia 5800 or upcoming Nokia’s flagship device, mighty Nokia N97.

Fortunately, my friend Jamie Fuller, developer of the cool Rotary Dialer application and an addictive Sensitive game, goes beyond all hardware limitations with the release of his new project that brings a multi-touch like interface to Nokia S60 devices!

Jamie has managed to develop a technology capable to use Nokia 5800's resistive touch screen to perform multi-touch like function and control the simple but addictive game with "multiple touch-points"!

This experimental multitouch UI for S60 devices was introduced more than a two months ago and now I am happy to inform you that game first ever multitouch based game has reached the alpha stage and is ready for public testing!

Experimental 'Multi-touch' on nokia 5800

Unfortunately, due the various reasons, Jaime has no interest in further developing of this game and his innovative flash based UI that brings first taste of multitouch controls to S60 users and I just can’t tell you how sad I am.

Hi All,

As promised, here is the current version of "Space Dancer".

I guess it could be called an alpha version but It's as finished as I am going to make it, it contains all the features I wanted to add including world leader boards etc.But the project has since become uninteresting to me. I have 4 other projects on the go and this one quickly became the least enjoyable of them.

Anyway, without further ado here is the game, Many thanks to Danceaway64 for the great tracks.. . .

Anyway please enjoy and let me have your feedback. Huge thanks to www.symbian-freak.com and to danceaway64

Cheers
Jamie

I just hope that this is not a final decision and he will surprise us with more cool games sooner or later, it's kind of sad when very talented developer with really great and unique ideas has to stop with further development.

Anyway, the 'Space Dancer' is similar to 'DDR' and 'Guitar Hero' and basically all you need to do is to catch the red lasers by pressing the corresponding onscreen buttons as the laser approaches it.

This may sounds simple at first, but it really isn't and it shows to be more challenging than it looks like. By tapping the title of the song in the main screen you can switch between the three songs/speed levels.

Furthermore there is an option to upload scores online and it requires a data connection of course but you can also view the best scores from your PC right here.
